Sweet Meteor of Death

from Fallout by Sam Nabi

lyrics

I’m so tired of trying to get ahead
Give me that sweet meteor of death
I’m so tired of living on the edge
Give me that sweet meteor of death

I don’t know how I built up this vision of paradise
I never ventured past the veneer
It’s the best foot forward and we want to buy in
We’re all complicit broadcasting to all of our friends
Face value is laced with how you get the angle right
Paint away the faintest lines that may betray the cracks
But it still rips raw when you relax your frontal lobe
Comatose, you know you’re open to attack from

Two-faced jugglers, too late to play nice with one another
We gotta overpromise, smile a lot and hope the bomb hits
When you’re not there to clean up the mess for y’all’s kids
The apocalypse will see us sitting on our asses
Refreshing the page, saying, “This too shall pass”
In the aftermath we’ll discover we’re really bad at math
Too reliant on gadgets, we can’t even cook pasta fast

I’m so tired of trying to get ahead
Give me that sweet meteor of death
I’m so tired of living on the edge
Give me that sweet meteor of death

Concrete is nothing to pre-cambrian rock
We came and we saw, made a lot of money and raised the alarm
The fate of the farm wasted away and our cities are gone
To dust with this vein of quartz still scraping along
Geological timescales are great for nihilists
Nothing matters in the end ‘cause forward motion’s tireless
Why is it worth trying to focus on the finer points
Why resist when we know the sun’ll fry us all to bits?

Night and day, sunshine and rain, predator/prey
There’s always two sides to a story if you’re willing to change
We may have granite cliffs standing here since time began
Even they will find water and wind wearing them down to sand
How easy, then, for pavement made by human hands
To be fractured by a tiny weed willing to take a stand?
How impermanent borders are, how hollow bureaucracy
How paper-thin the laws, policy, locks, and keys

I’m so tired of trying to get ahead
Give me that sweet meteor of death
I’m so tired of living on the edge
Give me that sweet meteor of death

It’s a slow burn, when will the folks learn?
This planet will leave most of us roasted post-turn
Of the century, I can’t envision 2100
When there’s enemy thunder coming for any of us – no sir
Which fire will be the one to end the economy?
When we’re all gone the borders will turn to botany
If a tree falls in the forest it’ll be free to die
No more fussing over the meaning of life

I’m so tired of trying to get ahead
Give me that sweet meteor of death
I’m so tired of living on the edge
Give me that sweet meteor of death
